Timeline Learning Circles 'Saving Our planet' 2017

Phase 1. February 06 - March 05   2017

Introduction
Official opening of the Learning Circle with the facilitator’s welcome message.

Before we start to learn and work together, it is nice to know who everyone is.

Once you have access to the wiki, you can start editing your own school page.

We will also make an introduction to children's rights.

If you click on the name of your school on this page, you can start with the first phase!

Phase 2. March 06 - April 02   2017

Challenge 1: Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7)

Significance

We are living in the Age of Energy. The fossil fuel based economy of the present must give way to the renewable energy based economy of the future, but getting there is one of the greatest challenge humanity faces. Science can help meet this challenge by discovering new materials that efficiently harvest solar radiation, store energy for later use, and reconvert the stored energy when needed.

Task 1. How do people use Affordable and Clean Energy?

Please make a research and find out:

- What kinds of Affordable energy mentioned in the pictures beneath can be used in your country?

- How effective these kinds of energy are used in your country? (show numbers and other data)

- What are the perspectives of increasing Affordable and Clean Energy usage?

Task 2. Create your Energy Saving Guide.

Create the Energy Saving Guide  which show you how easy it is to cut your energy use at home and also on the road. The easy, practical solutions for saving energy may include tips you can use today -- from the roof and landscaping to appliances and lights. They are good for your wallet and for the environment -- and actions that you take help reduce our national needs to produce or import more energy, thereby improving our energy security.

Task 3. Energy Saving practicing

We would like you to make your own 'Saving energy experiment'.

Choices about energy supply are just one of the may scientific and technical issues our nation faces now and in the future. Evaluating all these issues will be easier if citizens have a basic understanding of the scientific process and can consider scientific issues rationally. Watching or making Saving energy  experiments we can foster in students a new sense of wonder and curiosity about science and energy

Phase 3. April 03 – May 07   2017

Challenge 2: Climate Action (SDG 13)

Task 1: Hastag Activity

Find out what you schools carbon footprint is. Make a class activity to reduce your school’s carbon footprint. Start a hastag (tweet alongside #globalgoals a UN initiative) about it and challenge other schools to do the same.

Task 2: Research Activity

Do research online and check out the companies you buy your clothes/ electronics/ food from. Do you know where the products come from and in which country they are produced? How “green/clean” are they?

Choose one company and research and find out more about them answering the following questions:

  • Do they have sustainable practices and don’t harm the environment?

  • How does this company inform you as a consumer about their attempt to reduce their carbon footprint/ clean practices?

  • Where are their goods manufactured and what laws are in place in those countries to protect the environment? Did this country sign the Paris Agreement?

  • Contact the company and do an interview or search for online information. What difficulties do they experience in producing their products as “green/ clean” as possible and reduce their carbon footprint and still be affordable/ competitive?

  • Which other questions would you like to ask?

Present your research to your group

Task 3: Create an Infographic Activity

An infographic (information graphic) is a representation of information in a graphic format designed to make the data easily understandable at a glance. A well-designed infographic can help you simplify a complicated subject or turn an otherwise boring subject into a captivating experience

Use your knowledge on Climate Change to create a colourful, interesting infographic to explain the what the effects of Climate Change is on the planet. You can focus on one aspect like rising water levels in the oceans, or do an overview of Climate Change in general. Include all the facts you have gathered through research. Below you can see some examples of infographics to give you some ideas.

Task 4: Paris Agreement Research Activity

On April 22 – Earth Day – the Paris Agreement became one step closer to having legal effect around the world, as the 195 countries that adopted the agreement in December began signing it – and 175 signing in person at a special UN ceremony.

Below is the full Paris Agreement as well as a short summary of the Agreement and the events leading up to it. Read these and do additional research about your country. Use the questions below as a guide to write a 200 – 400-word essay about your findings.

List of Parties that signed the Paris Agreement 22 Apr 16

  • What are the major areas of Climate Change that this agreement has pledged to change?

  • Is your country on the list of 195 that has signed (or is due to sign the agreement)?

  • If not, do research to find out why not.

  • If yes, do research to find out what your country has already done since the Durban Climate Change Convention in 2011, and what new plans or legislation is coming into play to comply with the new Paris Agreement

  • Find out if there are any projects in your town/ city/ school that you can become involved in to reduce your carbon footprint.

  • What can you do at home to limit or reduce your family’s impact on Climate Change?

Phase 4. May 08 – June 02  2017

Summaries and Closing

Summaries
Each class summarizes all knowledge and skills they got from the learning Circle via creating and posting 2-3 minutes “Saving Our Planet”media.

Evaluation:

With your feedback we can improve our Learning Circles and make the next even more successful.
